Mizzou is bowl-bound. The team that is 2-4 in games I've attended is headed to a bowl game. I have trouble believing it because they aren't very good. I guess when 56 D-1 schools get invited, my favorite team might as well be one of them. Good or not.
A few notes about the Tigers.
- Brad Smith, the NCAA's leading all-time rusher for QBs, has been completely shut down three of the last five games. This makes me think that perhaps the supporting cast isn't so good.
- Antwan Randle El, the former leading QB rusher, played for some bad college football teams at Indiana. Maybe there's some cause and effect thing going on here. Randle El's teams never even went to a bowl, though.
- I've watched the Tigers lose to New Mexico (mediocre Mountain West team), Texas (great team), KU (mediocre Big 12 team), and CU (above average Big 12 team). I've seen Mizzou beat Arkansas State (considered mediocre in the Sun Belt) and Nebraska (mediocre Big 12 team). Mizzou is awash in mediocrity.
- My trip to Colorado was a blast before the game started. We went to "The Sink," or as they call it, "The World Famous Sink." I'd never heard of it. Anyway, great bar/pizza place where fans congregate before the games. Had Mizzou not stunk it up so badly we might have stuck around to see what it was like after a CU win.
- At the game, there was a Mizzou fan in front of us who said that CU's coach, Gary Barnett, changed CU's colors to gold and black when he was hired. Before that CU's colors were silver and gold. I think he might have his timing wrong, but he might be right that CU's colors used to be silver and gold. I don't know how to look it up. I just remember CU wearing black/gold when they got 5 downs way back in 1990.
- Another Mizzou fan mentioned during the third quarter that he was glad the Tigers felt the sense of urgency (we were down 24-12, I think) and had gone to the no-huddle offense. I didn't have the heart to tell him that this "sense of urgency" started against Arkansas State and that the Tigers hadn't huddled up this season. It amazes me what people don't see.
- The CU fans were nice. All except for one guy at the bar wearing a Boston Red Sox hat. If you're reading this Mr. CU Red Sox Guy, no we did not receive the round of Shirley Temples you sent us. Jackass.
- In spite of the Tigers' mediocrity, they still could win the Big 12 North. While a North Championship would be nice, it's kind of like being the tallest midget. Oh, and it comes with an invitation to play Texas in Houston. Pass.
- So, it goes like this, if the Tigers beat K-State, CU loses to Nebraska, and then ISU beats KU, the Tigers will win the North. It's not likely, but wouldn't shock me too much. I figure the Tigers will be a 3 to 5 point underdog in Manhattan, CU will be a 10 point favorite against Nebraska, and ISU will be 3 to 5 point favorite at KU. It would require three road teams to win, but only one mild upset and another upset a bit bigger. Not impossible.
- The Tigers will lose to K-State and end the suspense early.
- I watched the ISU/CU game. Joel Myers did the play-by-play and he doesn't bother me too much usually. He does think that just about every play is the biggest play of the game, and that gets tiresome, but otherwise he's okay. At the end of the game he made a comment that Mizzou needs a ton of help to win the North, while ISU didn't. While ISU is now a better team than the Tigers, ISU needs KSU to beat Mizzou. If Mizzou wins ISU is done, so I think Myers was overstating the situation. ISU needs K-State and Nebraska to win; Mizzou needs ISU and Nebraska to win. Same amount of help.
- As for the bowl, College Football News is predicting the Tigers will play in the Something Houston Bowl on December 31 against the Nevada Wolfpack. I'd rather play a BCS conference school to make the loss less embarrassing, but it'll just be nice to bowl.
- Listening to the pre-game MU/Baylor game on Saturday, Mike Kelly said that Mike Alden has been lobbying the Independence Bowl for another invitation since before the season even began. Whether this is true, I have no idea, but I'd hope for better from the Athletic Director. When I'm the AD I'm going to lobby the Rose Bowl.
- Cheers to Brad Smith, best QB in Mizzou history. Tallest midget? Sure, but so what, he's our midget.
I think CU used silver as an "accent color" and went a little nutty with it. They definitely wore it a lot in basketball, often at home rather than white uniforms, but I think the football team generally wore black and white during the Neuheisal era. Regardless of what they've been wearing recently, I think all fans, both CU and non-CU fans, should be pleased that they axed those old UCLA-like uniforms they wore in the early 80s. I always laughed when the old-school Big 8 announcers called them the "fighting Buffs" while they were prancing around in powder blue and yellow.
As a KU fan, I won't miss Brad Smith all that much. Then again, he had three horrible games against us so maybe I should. But I do feel glad for him that he's almost out from under the yoke of unrealistic expectations that has weighed on him since he destroyed Illinois in his first game. Great player, for sure, but he's always had this cloud of unfullfilled potential over him because he didn't become, say Vince Young. Enjoy your freedom, Brad. You earned it.

I did a little research. Interestingly enough, the official colors of CU are silver and gold. According to the book Glory Colorado, these colors were adopted by the class of 1888, as a symbol of the mineral wealth of this state. But in 1921, as football became more popular, there were complaints from the students that silver and gold did not look good on football jerseys. In fact, silver and gold ended up looking like dirty gray and dark yellow. It wasn't until 1959 that the football team changed its jerseys to black with yellow. And although the football team seems to have set the trend with its color choice, CU still has the official colors of silver and gold. So that Missouri fan at the bar was almost right, he was only off by 45 years or so. Although i like his story better. Can you imagine Barnett's conversation if that drunk's story was true?
CU Athletic Dir: Welcome aboard Gary!
Gary Barnett: I want to change our colors.
AD: What?
GB: Our colors. Silver and Gold sucks. I want Black and Gold. Black and Gold looks better on a football uniform.
AD: Well Gary, there's more than the football team to consider here. Silver and Gold have been our colors since 1888. What about all the other teams that we have besides football? Not to mention the thousands of athletes who have worn Silver and Gold proudly over the last 100+ years? And the alumni! My God what will people say? Silver and Gold has defined the University since the very beginning!
GB: I want Black and Gold.
AD: Gary, I really don't think we can pull that off. Just out of curiosity, why?
GB: Because of Missouri.
AD: Pardon?
GB: Missouri. You know the Tigers? I like them. I want my football team to look like them.
AD: You mean the University of Missouri in Columbia? The school that we share a conference with and have been competing against all these years?
GB: Yep. I want to honor Mizzou by changing Colorado's school colors to Black and Gold.
AD: Ok.

Barnett is a Mizzou alum, so that scenario is entirely possible....

Now you're starting to sound like that drunk in the bar.
It was nice reading an objective Missouri fan's viewpoint in your posting above. All of the Tiger fans around here that I know are so far gone it's unbelievable. You wrote a month or so ago about the Astros hanging a banner that boasted "2005 Wild Card Champions", well, that's what's going on here with these Mizzou fans. This morning one of my co-workers met me in the hallway and said "We're going bowling!". Then he pawed at the air in front of him with his hand a la Catwoman, and made a feeble attempt at a Tiger roar with his vocal chords. I tried to stare at him dumbfounded but I couldn't keep a straight face. For most of the folks around here, this bowl season will give 'em something to talk about for at least 5 years to come.

Through the years at different points I would admit to myself that I needed
to do something about it. I would start a diet and not see any results so
I would quit. I crash dieted several times and lost quite a bit, but always
gained it back...

Over the next few years, Lisa became increasingly anxious to slim down.
"I felt helpless because I wanted to exercise, but it was hard to find time," she says.
Even after what happened with fen-phen, she experimented with diet pills - but, she says,
"nothing made me feel healthy or helped me lose much weight." Finally, one morning in January 2004,
Lisa had a moment of clarity.
