The Day After Tomorrow

Over the course of the day I watched this movie.  Standard disaster fare, no worse or better than all the others really.  There's always something in these movies that bugs me and keeps me from liking it -- in The Day After Tomorrow the fact that Dennis Quaid was risking life and limb to get his son, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, felt wrong to me.  Jake was playing a 17 year old, but he was 24 at the time and looked every bit the 24 year old.  If the kid was ten or something I'd understand the trek -- but it was nonsensical.  I especially don't understand Sela Ward not objecting to Quaid going on the death journey.  Jake is a man, for Godsake.  He doesn't need to be rescued.

Raising Jeffrey Dahmer

Several months ago I reviewed Lionel Dahmer's memoir, A Father's Story, in this space.  I mentioned that some Kansas City filmmakers were adapting the book for the big screen.  Last fall the movie was shot and I just came across the trailer.  It's appropriately creepy.  The production values appear to be pretty good for a small budget film and I hear it's generating some buzz.  If you'd like to read more about the movie, formerly known as Sorry, Dad, check out Raising Jeffrey Dahmer.

DTS Update...

Whoa, it's been a long time.  Before I disappeared I was getting about 50 hits a day to this here blog where I write of everything and nothing at the same time.  I don't know if that's a lot or a little, but it seemed pretty good to me.   During baseball playoffs, I was seeing about 80 folks here a day.  Then, I vanished like a fart in the wind -- that's what the warden said when Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank.  Of course, my disappearance didn't involve Rita Hayworth or a sewer of crap. 

No, I disappeared because my job changed and I got really busy.  A good kind of busy.  Very rewarding.  I was working more which cut into my leisure time, which is what Stories is.  Leisure.  I'm here to fill you in on what I didn't write.

Showtime's Masters of Horror

A couple months ago I commented on Showtime's new series called Masters of Horror.  Well, here is the 411 on the adaptation of Joe Lansdale's short story, Incident Off and On a Mountain Road.  On that site, you can read a synopsis and watch clips from the show.  Set your Tivos and DVRs for October 28.

Anchorman

The first time I saw Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy I was disappointed.  I'd heard good things and expected good things, but I thought the movie started out poorly and consisted of nothing more than some good scenes.  Later, a friend and I discussed how the movie failed to live up to our expectations, but then something magical happened:  we started throwing out Anchorman lines ("When in Rome...", "I'm going to punch you in the ovary," "I killed a guy with a trident.")  The lines kept coming and coming.  I went back and watched the movie again, and then again, and then one more time.  This movie is now one of my favorites.  How did this happen?

FEAST Review

Ah, some Project Greenlight news.  It's been months since the last episode, so it's good to hear something about the show and the movie it created.  Just a little morsel to feed my obsession, but I'll take it.

According to Ain't it Cool News FEAST was recently screened (test screened?).  They file the following for our consumption: FEAST Review.  It's nice to see John Gulager get some praise after a rough season of playing Mushmouth -- maybe he has a future out there.

My Blockbuster Queue

It's time for another installment of My Blockbuster Queue where I rank and discuss the movies I've rented and enjoyed (or otherwise).  This edition promises to be uninspired, much like the movies ranked below.  Mired in mediocrity.  Overwhelmingly average.   In fact, five of the movies I ranked in the last installment would have been first up against these.  That's not to say that a few of the movies below weren't pretty good -- just that nothing came close to knocking my socks off.  So, like always, from worst to first:

10.  The Terminal.  Just thinking about this movie makes me ill.  Tedious and then some. 

Hollywood's Savior?

I've written about the health of Hollywood.  I've directed readers to Slate's piece on the health of Hollywood.  The continued success of Hollywood as we know it is in question, I chicken littled.  Alas, all those concerns have been swept away by the announcement that Jose Canseco's tell-all book will be adapted for the big screen.  I can't wait.  Here's the info:
